Okay, it's been a week of giving away 27 things a day. But today I have to tell you that I've been the recipient of SOME ONE ELSE's clearing out process.
"Mom, I have to have a two piece wool tweed suit, an orange sweater vest, and a wide striped tie." Has my 14 year old son gone retro? Well, yes, but only to appear in the school production of Bel Kaufman's Up the Down Staircase (movie version, Sandy Dennis, remember?) "Oh, and I need it by Monday." Of course.
Well, where else to head but my local Goodwill Store, where they have come to almost know me by name. (They do come out with the cart when they see my car drive up!) In we walked, stopping by after Friday play rehearsal. Clean and shining, long rows of clothing, artistically arranged by color. A veritable rainbow of options. But a two piece wool tweed suit? In April? In Atlanta?
Taking a deep breath, we headed to Men's. The first two tweed sport coats fit him fine. "But Mom, I really need a suit." So we kept looking. I reached for a Harris Tweed, dark brown with a bit of blue, and voila! Not a sport coat, but a pair of slacks with it. The longed-for two piece suit, but would it fit? Into the dressing room, and as my mother used to say, lo and behold! Perfect. Just needed a little hem. Simple.
Who knew it could be so easy? Anticpating a weekend of searching every Salvation Army and vintage store in town, all done in 15 minutes on the first try. All because some fine upstanding Gentleman decided to let go of his Botany 500 two piece, three button tweed suite. His giving away was our much-needed gain. What's that they say about one man's 'trash'....?
Guess there's something to this Goodwill hunting, after all.
