Some of my girlfriends and I have made a pact when it comes to celebrating birthdays. Getting together for lunch is gift enough. No need to shop for big expensive presents that (in most cases) we don't really need.
We do funky cards, have a horoscope book we read from every year, and bring some silly birthday candle glasses we make the honored one wear (while often taking pictures.) All in all, it keeps the focus on the fun of being together - where we most enjoy it - and helps us all keep costs down.
Every now and then we grab some $1 lottery tickets, but the last time I brought those, we weren't very lucky. So this year, when Patti said (several times over) how much she needed to 'relax!' I hit my own private stash to see what relaxing things I might be able to share. Before I knew it, I had enough fun little items to create her very own Relaxation Kit! A couple of packs of neat bath salts I'd picked up at my favorite beach shop last summer, a brand new eye mask (compliments of Air France!), a glowing red candle, and a few other goodies.
It was a fun and silly way to share the love, and as I promised P. "no (current) dollars were expended on this birthday goodie."
How creative can you get with what you already have? Enjoy! And see your shelves open up...
